In 2019, UPS will purchase 125 Tesla Semi trucks

UPS, which manages one of the largest fleet of commercial truck fleets in the world, announced the pre-order of 125 new fully electric Tesla Semi trucks. The new electric tractors will be supplemented by an extensive fleet of UPS, consisting of trucks and tractors, which use advanced technologies and work on alternative fuels, including electricity, natural gas, propane and others.

"For more than a century, UPS has remained the industry leader in the field of introducing new technologies that allow the fleet to be more efficiently operated. We are looking forward to replenishing our fleet with Tesla electric trucks, which will help us achieve even greater efficiency, "said Juan Perez, director of IT and engineering and engineering at UPS. "These revolutionary electric tractors mark a new era in which vehicles will be safer and more environmentally friendly, and the cost of ownership will be lower."

In the course of evaluating the expected performance of electric trucks in certain operating conditions, UPS provided Tesla with information on the actual movements of its trucks along existing routes. UPS often cooperates with suppliers of new automotive technologies, helping them develop solutions that meet its strict operational requirements.

According to Tesla, Semi electric tractors can travel up to 500 miles (800 kilometers) without recharging, they are very easy and convenient to manage, they are safe on the road and cheaper than alternative solutions due to a much lower cost of ownership in the long term. Safety features include automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, automatic lane detection, and a fully electronic braking and steering system with redundant components. According to the US government, the system of assistance to the driver Tesla can reduce the accident rate by 40%. Tesla plans to begin production of electric trucks in 2019, with UPS being one of the first companies to put them into operation.

This pre-order will help UPS approach the common goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions emitted by the company's vehicles in all countries by 12% by 2025 (the goal is determined using a methodology approved by the Science Based Targets organization).

By 2025 UPS intends to purchase 25% of all consumed electricity from suppliers using renewable energy sources. In addition, according to UPS plans, by 2020, every fourth vehicle a company buys annually will be a car running on advanced technologies or alternative fuel (in 2016 the share of such vehicles was 16%). Another new goal of the company is to increase the share of alternative fuels for land transport, which include all types of fuel, besides traditional gasoline and diesel, from 19.6% in 2016 to 40% in 2025.

In operation UPS is one of the largest private car fleets in the US, which has more than 8,5 thousand cars, working on advanced technologies and alternative fuels. There are electric cars, hybrid cars with electric drive and hydraulic drive, cars running on ethanol, compressed and liquefied natural gas, propane, as well as natural gas from renewable sources (biomethane) in the vehicle fleet of the company.

The commercial vehicle fleet of UPS also has one of the highest safety levels in the world: in 2016, the company invested more than $ 194 million in a global health and safety training program. The company continues to equip its eighth-grade vehicles with collision avoidance technology.

Recently, UPS has fallen into the Just 100 rating of JUST Capital, which includes industry players taking practical measures in the field of environmental protection. UPS also for the fifth year in a row falls into the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) and the 13th consecutive year in the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index.
