Police Investigate Cause of Collision Between KA Argo Bromo and KRL in Bekasi

Jakarta - The Metro Jaya Regional Police (Polda Metro Jaya) are currently investigating the cause of the deadly accident between the KA Argo Bromo Anggrek and the KRL Commuter Line at Bekasi Timur Station, which has resulted in 16 fatalities as of Thursday (30/4/2026). The investigation is focused on possible human error or technical issues in the train's operational system.

The death toll has risen after one passenger who was receiving intensive care in the ICU was reported to have passed away. According to Detik Health, the incident also left several other passengers injured, including an elderly person who had to undergo serious medical procedures.

Head of Public Relations for Polda Metro Jaya, Kombes Budi Hermanto, explained the legal steps being taken by the police to uncover the facts behind the tragedy. The investigation team has conducted a crime scene examination and has begun collecting statements from related parties.

"We will thoroughly examine whether this was related to human error or a system failure. Everything will be investigated through witness examinations, evidence, and crime scene processing," said Budi.

Further examinations are scheduled to target the driver (masinis) of the KA Argo Bromo Anggrek, as well as station officers and Railway Police (Polsuska), to fully reconstruct the chronology of the incident. Meanwhile, the police have already taken statements from an online taxi driver who was in the vicinity of the location.

"The examination of PT KAI personnel (the train driver, station officers, and Polsuska) will be conducted at the PT KAI office tomorrow," said Budi.

Investigators are also focusing on re-examining other witnesses who gave statements earlier this week to complete the case file. Information from on-the-ground witnesses is key to determining the direction of the investigation.

"The online taxi driver with the initials RRP was questioned yesterday (Tuesday) and today (Wednesday) at the Bekasi City Metro Police Resort," Budi added.

On the other hand, one of the survivors, Sariyati (63), is currently fighting to recover after undergoing major surgery due to damage to her internal organs. The elderly woman is being accompanied by volunteers because her immediate family is still outside Java Island.

Nia, a patient companion volunteer, explained that the removal of the spleen (splenectomy) had to be performed because Sariyati’s internal organs were severely damaged following the incident on Wednesday (29/4).

"Her mother (Sariyati) underwent surgery yesterday to remove her spleen (lien) because several parts of her internal organs were crushed," said Nia.

After the surgery, Sariyati’s condition is reported to be showing signs of stabilization, although she still requires close monitoring by the hospital medical team. The patient has now been moved from the operating room to the general ward for recovery.

"She is already conscious, but still in the recovery phase. She has been transferred to the inpatient room," Nia added.
