Indonesian Navy Introduces Its First Electric Bus at Naval Headquarters
The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) continues to demonstrate its commitment to supporting government programs by utilizing environmentally friendly technology. This was marked by the inaugural trial of an electric bus within the TNI environment, led directly by the Chief of Naval Staff (Kasal), Admiral TNI Dr. Muhammad Ali, at the Naval Headquarters (Mabesal) in Cilangkap, East Jakarta, on Wednesday (16/04).
This strategic program positions the Indonesian Navy as a pioneer in green mobility transformation within Indonesian military institutions. It also provides a direct contribution to national energy resilience, reducing dependence on imported fuel oil (BBM), and achieving the Net Zero Emission 2060 target. This represents a concrete manifestation of the Indonesian Navy’s contribution to accelerating the use of electric motor vehicles, as well as part of the effort to transition toward clean energy in the military environment. In addition to modernizing support facilities, the use of this electric bus also reflects a more efficient work system oriented toward environmental sustainability.
The electric bus has a capacity of 33 seats, is heavy-duty type, weighs 15.2 tons, and uses a 255 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate battery with a maximum speed of 100 km/h. It has undergone a series of extreme tests, including vibration, mechanical shock, water immersion, external fire, and overcurrent. The bus is also equipped with safety features such as a Main Power Cut Off Switch, automatic fire extinguisher (APAR) in the battery/control room, smoke detection, GPS tracking, battery monitoring, and 12-camera CCTV.
In front of the media, the Chief of Naval Staff stated that using electric buses for transporting Indonesian Navy personnel—especially those residing in housing complexes relatively far from their work units—is highly beneficial. In addition to improving the mobility efficiency of soldiers, the use of this electric bus also contributes to reducing air pollution in the Jakarta area.
