Beurawe Underpass in Banda Aceh Reopened After Five Days of Closure
Banda Aceh – The Beurawe Underpass in Banda Aceh City is once again accessible to vehicles after being closed for five days due to flooding caused by the theft of water pump cables in the area.
Head of the Banda Aceh City Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency (PUPR), Rulli Syahreza, said his team has completed the installation of the pump cables, allowing the underpass to be reopened to the public.
“Alhamdulillah, we have opened the Beurawe Underpass since 5 a.m. this morning. After our maximum efforts yesterday, the pumps only resumed operation at 9 p.m. last night. That’s why we immediately opened access for drivers this morning,” said Rulli, accompanied by Fernanda, Head of the Water Resources Division at the Banda Aceh City PUPR Agency, on Friday (8/5/2026).
Although vehicle access has been restored, the PUPR Agency is still working on restoring the full pump system at the underpass. Currently, only one pump is operational, while the other three are suspected to have damaged dynamos.
“For now, only one pump is running. The other three will be lifted this afternoon. It is estimated that the damage is in their dynamos,” Rulli said.
To prevent similar incidents from recurring, the Banda Aceh City Government will strengthen security for public facilities in the underpass area. The measures include installing CCTV by the Banda Aceh City Communication, Informatics, and Statistics Agency (Diskominfotik), adding garden lighting by the City’s DLHK3 Agency, and conducting routine patrols by the Satpol PP and WH.
Rulli also called on the public to help look after public facilities and increase their concern for the surrounding environment so that public assets remain well-maintained and can be optimally utilized by the community.
