Types of Trucks in Mining Areas

Various types of haul trucks in mining areas have very large capacities for transporting mining materials such as coal or nickel.

These large-capacity trucks are built to operate easily in challenging mining conditions, including steep terrain, extreme temperatures, and heavy loads.

So, what are the types of trucks found in mining sites according to their payload capacity and uses? The following is a summary quoted from MC Group, known as a Shacman truck distributor in Indonesia.

Dump Truck

The dump truck is the most commonly seen and widely used truck in mining operations. It is designed for transporting heavy materials such as rocks, ore, and other mining materials.

This truck features a dump body that can be raised or tilted to make unloading easier. The body is operated by a hydraulic system. Its advantages include the ability to carry large volumes of material at once and high durability in rough mining terrain.

Articulated Dump Truck (ADT)

An articulated dump truck has a pivoting joint in the middle, between the cab and the load body. This allows the front tractor and rear carrier to move independently.

This design greatly improves maneuverability in difficult and challenging terrain. Additionally, this type of truck is more stable on uneven ground compared to conventional dump trucks.

Haul Truck

Haul trucks are extremely large trucks specially designed for large-scale mining operations. With very high payload capacities—often reaching hundreds of tons—they are typically used in gold, coal, and copper mining.

Electric Haul Trucks

As the mining industry strives to reduce its environmental footprint, electric haul trucks are increasingly being used. These trucks are powered by electric systems, using overhead cables or rechargeable batteries.

Autonomous Haul Trucks

These large self-driving trucks can operate without a human driver. They utilize advanced technologies such as GPS, sensors, and artificial intelligence to navigate mining sites safely and efficiently.

Fuel Truck

Fuel trucks are used to transport fuel to heavy equipment at mining sites. They are equipped with large-capacity fuel tanks and easy-to-use filling systems.

Heavy Duty Truck

Heavy duty trucks are designed for transporting heavy loads over long distances. They feature strong chassis and suspension systems capable of carrying and delivering large payloads. They are commonly used in coal or metal mining areas to transport mined materials out of the site.

Flatbed Truck

Flatbed trucks have a flat, open cargo bed without sides or covers. They are used to transport equipment or materials that do not require protection, such as construction materials, pipes, or small heavy equipment. This design makes loading and unloading easier.

Lowboy Truck

This type of truck is used to transport heavy equipment to or from mining sites. It consists of a trailer with a low deck designed to carry heavy machinery. It is commonly used for transporting excavators, dozers, and other mining equipment.

Water Truck

Water trucks are equipped with large water tanks and are used for spraying water in mining areas. They come with water spray systems to suppress dust at the mining site.
