Truck tractor MAN F90 19.402 FLS Silent, 1994

The event was called MAN Full Range Days. From the title it is clear that this is a presentation with the opportunity to test the full line of the company's products from Nuremberg. Today I have expired the validity of the electronic tachograph card. The solution was found quickly - I sit behind the wheel of a road tractor with a truck MAN F90, with an analog tachograph and a paper "washer", filled manually. Nostalgia!

Spain, 2017. Or the independent republic of Catalonia? Surroundings of Monserrat mountain. Serpentines and sky-high avtobany, leading from the mountains on the coast, where it is still warm and you can swim, despite the fact that the calendar is not far off the 100th anniversary of the October Revolution in Russia.

And in my cabin the odometer shows almost 886,797 kilometers of the third circle, behind it a loaded semi-trailer for a relatively young but promising Fliegl brand, the total mass of the road train is 37 tons. Almost like in the famous song, only better: "in a close cabin", no, by no means not close, "smoke makhorochki", no, I do not smoke, "diesel curses quietly," why swearing - whispers! And in the rest, almost everything is true - "along the valleys and along the hills rolls", that's not just a container ship, but a curtain.

Wow, how I "hooked"! It is very important that this 1994 truck of the year was never subjected to restoration. Before the event, the Germans only slightly updated the frame with black paint and the assemblies and units installed on it. It is well preserved, so it is more valuable in the reliability of this kind of test drives.

In the cabin large-sized high roof stunned space, reach for some of the niches of the ceiling module is not so simple (my height is 176 cm). The steering column is regulated mechanically, but in two directions, the driver's seat on the pneumatic suspension is in no way inferior to the current one, and the changer on the right plus to everything else and a comfortable stand for resting legs. I am comfortable and comfortable.

The drive of the mechanical 16-speed gearbox operating under the "2H" scheme has not lost its clearness and good fixation. The trigger responsible for the "halves" is comfortable in the hand. The scale of the analog tachometer, which operates from the output of an alternating current generator, is marked with colors, but not just by green and red zones, but by shading and halftones, which makes it intuitively clear how much these engine speeds are optimal in a particular situation. I want to sing something about "warm tube sound" - so today associate caress technique from the pre-digital era. But I will try to be objective.

The steering wheel, though comfortable, but large in diameter and unusually thin. Mirrors by today's standards are small, on the left there is basically no hemisphere, it was necessary to extend the neck in order to set up a road train for a photo session in a narrow parking lot in the gorge. At a speed of about 70 km / h, a small diagonal buildup and yaw begins, it is not difficult to cope with these phenomena, but a constant correction of the course is required. With the increase in speed, these phenomena are intensifying, so it is best to adhere to the regime of about 75-80 km / h - comfortable cruising speed. If you want faster, then at least the road train is understandable and predictable, it requires concentration and concentration in management. And do not forget that most of the electronic systems, driver's assistants that have become familiar today, are absent here, except for the anti-lock braking system.

And now that's just about when the mechanic overacts electronics. The response of the accelerator pedal is delicate, not a single modern firmware of the electronic pedal will bypass direct communication on the principle "more fuel supply = more engine output". Elasticity of the "honest" 12-liter engine of the second European class of toxicity is "deputy": all 1730 Nm are available to the dexterous and experienced chauffeur on a shelf, 500 revolutions, from 1000 to 1500 rpm, while the maximum power of the herd is 400 heads - 1800 min-1 - the most it.

By the way, and someone was able to convincingly prove by the end of 2017 that it is the car exhaust carbon dioxide that ruins the planet? About particles of soot of diesel exhaust and the need to neutralize their issues, but about the greenhouse effect - a big-oh-oh question. Well it is, by the way. Better admire how the intarder works! Vkusnyatina: clear, proportional slowing, without delay. Note that I tested a loaded road train in a mountainous area at an ambient temperature of +27 ° C.

My first personal foreign car, bought at the beginning of the XXI century, is a second-hand "German" of the early nineties. Once again, I'm convinced how they all look alike. No, not by design and technical characteristics, but by attitude - a philanthropic attitude. All these keys with soft backlighting, arrows in analog devices, even the texture of plastics and the smell in the cockpit! We change the car to the truck and ... the space around almost did not change, only the dimensions and purpose of the vehicle became different. But the controls, efforts on them, moves lever KP, landing behind the wheel and adjusting the seat - everything is stable, but because it's familiar, comfortable, comfortable. It's a pity only that to understand, feel this monumental comfort and confidence in the car, to comprehend this thrill of victory over space in motion, most of the Russian hard-working chauffeurs could only by the example of a far from new technique.

And here is another curious moment. In fact, we were circumvented by a tachograph-recorder with a circular paper blank, called simply "puck". For domestic transport in Russia it was not required for a long time, therefore in the second-hand imported from Germany technique the tachograph existed "for furniture", and when it became mandatory, a year later it was outlawed, giving way to a digital device. A subtle thread of associations against the backdrop of the history of great countries, is not it?

Now a down-to-earth and not philosophical look at the twenty-four-year-old MAN F90 from the repair ditch of the metalwork shop.

Much has been done fundamentally, for centuries, and has not required intervention for almost a quarter of a century - this is a plus. Braking mechanisms of the rear axle are drum, require regular maintenance and the supply of pads - minus. The frame is unusually spacious: there is nothing superfluous, there are countless boxes, electronic blocks, AdBlue refueling capacity, as well as, of course, the catalytic neutralization system with a complex node of the modern particulate filter. Visually I did not find a press oiler in the running gear, but I know for sure that there are several points of infrequent lubrication and control with adjustment in this machine.

The conclusion suggests itself. In more modern tractor units from Nuremberg, designers relieved locksmiths of some of the previously mandatory work, but with the growth of the ecological class new nodes were added that require attention. There are no longer any "perpetual" technical solutions in the current cars, so, within the limits of the regulations, one has to remember about the service life of the individual components, so that at a serious run avoid a sudden refusal, and this is a minus, especially for our country. That is, in general, the laboriousness of servicing old and new machines remained at a close level, but the problems and list of operations changed. A modern mechanic must necessarily be armed not only with a tool, but also with a tester, a diagnostic scanner, and a carrier of databases of various data ...

It is difficult to calculate how many cubic meters and kilograms of cargo moved across a multitude of borders, lands, provinces, principalities, kingdoms, as well as regions and edges, this is not just a simple, but a flagship quarter-century ago the MAN F90 truck tractor. However, even today these cars, which have been tattered by roads, age and multi-million runs, still meet not only in the CIS, but also in Europe.
